HIV in the United States: At A Glance Blacks/African Americans continue to experience the most severe burden of HIV, compared with other races and ethnicities.
Blacks represent approximately 12% of the U.S. population, but accounted for an estimated 44% of new HIV infections in 2010. They also accounted for 44% of people living with HIV infection in 2009
Unless the course of the epidemic changes, at some point in their lifetime, an estimated 1 in 16 black men and 1 in 32 black women will be diagnosed with HIV infection.
Also from CDC: rates of new HIV infection - White 7 per 100,000; Black 60 per 100,000. What this translates to is Blacks are 8 times more likely than Whites to be infected by HIV.
Crime statistics by race are much more difficult to access. The tables are now buried in the FBI website where they used to be much more openly published. The tables 43, 49 and 55 show the rate of violent crime for Blacks is 32% during 2012 which means that of violent crimes reported, the perpetrator is black 32% of the time. Blacks make up 12% of the population of the USA. That translates to a violent crime rate for Blacks that is 3.5 times the violent crime rate for Whites.
What this means to a provider. The risk of HIV infection and the risk of being a victim of violent crime are drastically higher if they service Black men.
Is this racist, or is it being realistic about relative risk?
