Kobe Bryant and 3 others killed in Helicopter Crash.

Kobe was a really cool guy. Made his mistakes but managed to stay focused. Lots of respect. It’s a free country. Fly where you want when you want. Screw who you want (with consent). When you want. I’m not big on regulations telling us what we can’t and can’t do but common sense should rule the day. I’m not saying any of these celebrities forced the pilots or in this case their daughters and friends to fly in bad weather but I think the pilots are afraid to say no. Not much else can explain why super rich and famous people or really anyone winds up getting killed. Truth be told plenty of other pilots woke up that morning. Checked the weather and went back to sleep.

Well yeah there were rape charges but you never know exactly what happens in these situations. The accuser could have just as easily saw a big pay day. Obviously he should have kept it in his pants on that particular evening.

First time Kobe ever passed.

If the TMZ report is to be believed, it sounds like gottagetthereitis. A fatal condition in those who fly or own airplanes, never mind helicopters. A sad deal all around.
I couldn’t imagine the sickening pain of losing a spouse AND child at the same time. Absolutely saying prayers for the healing of his loved ones ❤️❤️❤️

It wasn't his helicopter. Helicopter was owned by Island Express Holding Corp. Had $50M liability limit. Blue Book value on it is like $750K. With tons of upgrades probably $5M. N# was N72EX.

An rotary wing pilots here?

News this afternoon indicates they were VFR initially (in very marginal conditions) and then requested SVFR when BUR went IFR. Eventually got SVFRCclearance bad we’re scud running (at 150 kts!!) when the turned into terrain. Why the hell would you even leave VFR and not just file IFR initially?

That’s considerably more than $50 million. I’m just curious how liability policies work in this scenario. Personally and after the daughter was lost I would just walk away if I were his family.

Another scenario would be if he was still actively playing for the Lakers?

Maybe it’s a dumb question but Kobe and his brand had huge earning potential for the next 20-30 years similar to Jordon.

Not similar to the Jordan brand, BUT his different ventures would of earned millions.

Experienced pilot.

Insurance wouldn’t let the pilot fly unless he was instrument rated. S-76B are all instrument equipped. And you can’t get Special VFR clearance in a]restricted airspace unless you plane or copper is instrument equipped.

And in a rotary wing aircraft, why scud run at over than 150 kts?

As for liability, assuming the previous post on Kobe not owning the helicopter, much will depend on who the pilot works for. If it’s a PART 135 charter, then the pilot doesn’t work for Kobe and Kobe’s estate is a Plaintiff and the eight passengers wrongful death beneficiary’s chop up the amount of liability coverage. Even if it’s $50M, it’s not nearly enough to go around. Carrier will just say here it is, you guys split it.

If it’s more if an hourly rental and Kobe hired him, then potentially, Kobe’s estate could be on the hook fOr liability claims after the alleged $50M plays out. But Kobe can’t sue himself. So wile the $50 is still likely gone, it much closer to enough.
