I think the turn signal analogy is right on the money. It always amazes me that 90% of people won't let you change lanes, when you've got your turn signal on, and it's obvious that you're about to miss an exit. Signaling to change lanes is kind of like asking for a tiny favor, and the answer is usually no.
Driving behavior is a good way to measure character, because of the anonymity factor. People know they can treat you like shit because there is no possible reward or punishment for their behavior. Letting someone change lanes is a good deed, done for it's own sake.
There's a song by David Wilcox (the folk singer not the rocker) that talks about knowing someone's true nature by the way they treat people who have no power. One of the lines is, "if he's rude to the waiter, run!"
