To use Newark as an example, 80% of gang homicides had NOTHING to do with drugs. So the data presented does not depict how many gang homicides there were out of the total homicides in Newark and, secondly, clearly states that the majority (80%) of the gang homicides were NOT drug related.
Using data from 2003 through 2008:
• Newark, N.J.: 20.0% percent of gang homicides were connected to drugs.
• Oakland, CA: 12.5% of gang homicides were connected to drugs.
• Oklahoma City, OK: 25.4% percent of gang homicides were connected to drugs.
• Los Angeles, CA: 5.0% of gang homicides were connected to drugs.

And the "personal animosity" that LE doesn't "attribute" directly to drugs stems from the fact that these gangs are often violent rivals in the illicit drug business, and drugs are a principal source of income that sustains and perpetuates the gangs' very existence! Again, as I stated earlier, I really don't care about the make-up of who committed the more than 17,000 gun homicides in the U.S. each year. I'm sure that many of the homicides were done by people under the influence of alcohol. Many were committed due to family violence. We have a problem in the U.S. that other countries similar to us do NOT have. To reiterate,using your data, even if you "solve" the drug problem and eliminate the estimated 1,200 per year who die in drug-related gun homicides, you still have roughly 16,000 other homicides.Just an FYI, Speedy, the UNODC reported there were 9960 gun related homicides in 2010: not your paranoid and inflated "17,000".
