He was a serious man-hunter, called out of retirement to do a job that needed to be done quickly. Speaking as someone who has actually flown fighter aircraft (although for the Air Force, not the Navy) I saw pretty much nothing in the original Top Gun that was realistic. Things just aren't done the way they were portrayed. But the reality wouldn't be dramatic enough for Hollywood.
Wouldn't Maverick be almost 60 years old now or 60 years old?
And he would be too old to fly combat jet fighters?
