I think that given the combination of average age of hobbyist and the most common reason why they hobby (not getting TLC from the SO), it's not that surprising that the GFE/making love experience is preferable.

Younger unattached guys will more likely go for PSE, I would think.

There are two things I'm going to take away from this enlightening discussion. (1) The comment of chateau_becot reminding us that this is all an illusion. When the provider hugs you good bye, it's over. First thing she does after you walk out the door is check her messages. If I ever get caught hobbying (perish the thought), I would try to convince my SO that the providers were not a threat to the marriage. Us older guys want to pretend more of a soul connection than we really have. Something's missing. It's SirLanceHerNot, I think, who has the byline "A wife is a person who's constantly telling you you're not worth a fuck." He's close to the truth of why we do what we do. The GFE is an attempt to fix that.
