Seriously, Ginger. It looks like onyx and or jade to me that has been very well polished. We'll let SNL do the other research.

Hmmmm. Ginger and SNL both chess players??? I've never thought of doubles chess . . .

Nice chess set, it sure looks like it's made out of marble or some other type of polished stone. That would be my first assumption. Did you ever ask the seller what he paid for it?
He told me he paid around $200, several years ago at a little mom & pop antique shop while traveling. He said he's had it for a while.

I contacted an appraiser today. I sent her the pictures. She told me that due to the lack of markings, there is a very good liklihood that it was commissioned. She said it's definitely old, and definitely handmade...but that was as far as she would go without charging me $150 an hour to research it. Considering I only paid that for the chess board...yeah, I'm cheap. lol

I did send off my entry for tickets to the Antiques Roadshow in Corpus Christi, TX, this summer. Tickets are given out by random, 3 weeks before the show. If I win... we'll have to come up with a code word for Eccie, so I can say "hi" to y'all on TV without the rest of the world knowing what I'm talking about.
Given the incredible detail and unique beauty (I'm really referring to the chess set now) you might investigate it being cold-cast polyresin, especially given how dense it must be to weigh 24 lbs. Without a doubt its a great find just because its clearly very unique and therefore quite special....exotic even! (I'm still referring to the chess set I promise!).

Ginger...when are you gonna do a tour in Central Arkansas anyway?

Is Gilligan gonna hafta go find Mary Ann?
Flyboy, there are no seams. Wouldn't polyresin pieces come from a mold?

Also, the pawns (& other pieces) are slightly different than one another, even slight differences as far as height. Which indicates hand carved.

You could hunt MaryAnn down...but I guarantee you that brunettes are nowhere near as satisfying as redheads. Patience is a virtue...in hobbying, as well as chess. I'll be home this weekend.
Ahh....you're probably correct then if they are different sizes. Polyresin won't show seams if done with care, but I can't imagine making different molds for different pieces.

In any event, I've never seen a chest set like that before .
