Bartering

I do see your point on the dollar amount. If the amount in question is your hourly rate, then no I wouldn't barter for it. Originally Posted by shorty

I would totally barter.

I need some dental work done, appliance repair, and can't think of anything else at the moment but if you have something you think I need (lol), let me know !!!!!

It's about available cash. If I have $10k in savings and I don't want to spend 6k on a boob job, I am just going to barter for it so I don't touch my savings. We are talking about guys who will NOT pay you the cash, but have something you might want.
There is apparently a "bartering thread" in one of the California review sites (not ECCIE). It was proposed that the Motherboard start one, and it was proposed to ECCIE, too.

There are a number of wrenches that get thrown into bartering, and I'm not going to remember them all, but here goes:
  • Her service doesn't live up to his expectations.
  • The amount of time is disputed.
  • His trade (whatever it is) doesn't match what she expected (i.e. the quality of the floor is different than what she expected).
  • There isn't a meeting of the minds on what her time and his services are worth.
  • All this result in lots of drama, disputes, etc.
  • It would be difficult to post the trades in a public forum without outing yourself somewhat.
  • There are geographical issues involved: Her incall is in far north Dallas, while his business is in Austin (this would only seem to work for large metro areas).
  • If it's professional services (legal work, medical/dental, accounting) the hobbyist is open to ethics or substandard work complaints or even negligence suits.
There are others, but those are the ones off the top of my head.
I could use a 7D hint hint hint....

Depends. Keep in mind that this done on a case by case basis.

True. One of the reasons why I wouldn't do it for such things.

[*]There isn't a meeting of the minds on what her time and his services are worth.
True.

Not really.

Only a fool would post about the specific trade in public.

You are thinking too much into it..

[*]If it's professional services (legal work, medical/dental, accounting) the hobbyist is open to ethics or substandard work complaints or even negligence suits.
True. Discretion is a must here.

Charles, if you have anything to great to offer.. hit me up.. LOL!

All you say is true Charles, and that's why this is NOT for everyone. There are many guys who have services to offer and can't afford to explain the missing cash by paying for it...for those guys, it works to their advantage.
I have done many trades of all kinds. All but one was good. That bad one was a total scammer (Houston) here on Eccie.

Things I currently need and/or want are:
Tires
Auto work
Flatscreen TV w/ HDMI hook ups
... thats all I can think of right now.

I have heard horror stories about everything lol .

I have head so many stories of barters gone wrong, then they just turn into another dramarama. Charles covered many of them above.

This is a cash-only world we live in here, go out and make enough money to pay for what you want. Bartering the COST of the goods or services is fine (wholesale/retail) and even expected, but not HOW the payment is to be made, that is always greenbacks on the barrelhead.
