Jeez, I know what you mean. Some of the Saturday night Syfy "originals" are pretty dang awful. The one you're thinking of is actually "Sharktopus" with Eric Roberts (now a veteran bad guy on their payroll), and the producers (including Roger Corman!) made it cheezy on purpose. Another cheddar fest was "Jersey Shore Shark Attack!" (A cathartic fantasy for everybody in America who wishes some giant sea creature would chow down on Snookie and The Situation and vomit them into the Marianas Trench.)

Earlier I incorrectly typed "SyFy." Let's be clear; Syfy is the actual name of the channel and the movie company, not the genre abbreviation "sci fi." (Perish the thought that good sci fi be associated with Syfy.) Syfy Pictures has become the last refuge for aging, B-grade actors. Or maybe it's like the old "Batman" series and some thespians (no, not lesbians, well, maybe, as there's a lot of ex-porn gals getting eaten - literally) may be getting involved because it's the "in" thing? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Hey, it's a paycheck.
