Just wanted to point out that the settings that have been disabled may default back to "On" when you get an update for the phone OS or by the App.

It may or may not tell you this when you see the "update complete" screen that most Apps show the first time you use the App after the update.

I am the biggest Tech guy, but I gotta say there is nothing good as Smartphones relate to this thing of ours.

I agree. But I'm a paranoid geek so I personally would recommend a virtual identity for online, then one for hobby, and then real world. I've read too many articles and know too much about online presense to want my real world id to be linked to anything I do online. I am a geek too, and please note folks all the new phone (smart or otherwise) have location tracking in them... try to use a very old phone... for hobby if at all, you can still be tracked though... but with much less accuracy...

smart phone with facebook or anything is disaster... as all smartphones now have GPS, and are sneaking on your location all the time... so if you logged in from the same location into 2 face book accounts or r google accounts its trivial on their end to figure out who you are.... they can locate you to pretty much 10 meters or better accuracy with a US-mil GPS (which is about 50m or so for commercial use) agumented with the A-GPS, which uses cell phone companies own towers, and Wifi Hotspots which transmit their GPS coods...
USA cell phone providers are even more disaster as they want you to be online all the time, (sell their data plan) and provide custom/branded software/rom for their devices...

Multiple identities, will also not be sufficient actually... its getting harder and harder to be private....

As both points relate to this topic, either find yourself an old phone (pre-2000) to use for the hobby with a pre-paid sim card. Or, power off your personal smartphone prior to leaving your origination point. And do not turn it back on until after you have reached your end point after hobby time. I use a dumb phone I buy with cash to do hobby calls on. Should I need to toss it, I do.

It is getting much more difficult for privacy in this day and age. With all the cameras and other means of surveillance in place one might get a little worried. Firefly had a quote which applies here "If you want to track something, use your eyes." High technology can be tricked and manipulated, low tech not so much.

Thus why I have zero social media accounts. No facebook, myspace, twitter, google+, boing boing, yahoo, MSN, or anything. Which is what I was talking about with the "manage your online presence" bit.

One thing that can happen is if you have some hobby friends on yahoo messenger or AIM. Facebook can search those contacts and make links to Real names on Facebook. There are tons of other types of accounts it can do this with also. Originally Posted by royamcr

Yahoo Mail/Google Mail can also feed into Facebook (it's been pimping me to add people for my job to my Facebook....)...it can scan your contacts list if you give it permission to. I STRONGLY would recommend people do not use their "regular" email for hobby...use a throwaway mail that's not traceable to your regular email account, your real name, or anything associated with you.

Just like the phone issue....I dumped GV and went with a real $20 throwaway from the dollar store. The phone is registered with my "hobby" email, not under my real name, nor my real address. I don't use my credit cards to recharge it, I pay CASH and buy a renewal/recharge/minutes card. If I have to go UTR -- I want to rest easy without worrying that I'm going to have a knock on the door one evening, or several representatives from the city wearing guns show up at my workplace asking to take a ride with them.

FB is kinda neat for about two weeks. you get to say hi to people you haven't talked to in years and keep score with whos doing what now. Then it is just f'in stupid there is a reason why you havn't talked to those people in years. it is because you ain't friends anymore. people come and go in your life, its only natural. and i also realized why would i want to hear the random thoughts of someone just because i went to the same school with them 15yrs ago? i didnt wanna listen to them back then and i sure don't care to hear their opinion now or know about some inane detail about little johnny. And why would i want to broadcast to over 100 people what the hell i am doing everyday of my life. if i wanna network with my friends i go to theys houses and drink a beer. F*** FB. Email was invented for a reason to talk to a specific person about a specific thing. it worked in 1990--it still works today.

If you use the Facebook app on your andriod phone, you can go to the phone's "settings" menu, select "accounts and sync" and disable "sync" under your FB account. I've been using my Facebook account with my android for months and haven't had any problems.

Just thought I would suggest something not as drastic as 2nd hobby phone etc.

However, if you ever update your software I would suggest that you check to make sure they didn't enable it during the update. Software makers are very sneaky about adding things in the terms and conditions you must agree to for updates. I haven't had to update my app but I definitely check after any updates.

There is some new application that facebook "shares" your recent searches or sites visited if you wish. The problem is, I have been on escort sites and it doesn't distingush "Heidi" from "Me". I almost outed myself unknowingly. One wrong click could ruin a person.

Be careful with electronics. If you check e-mail on an i-phone, you could accidentally e-mail a RL friend from your "hobby" account. PAY ATTENTION if you have multiple e-mail accounts on a smart phone.

Go to the top right of the screen, click on ACCOUNT, click on EDIT FRIENDS, left side of screen and click CONTACTS. you will see ALL phone numbers from your cell phone (FB friends or not) are published that you have stored in your mobile phone. TO REMOVE, go to the right column, click on "this page." It's at the end of the contacts list.

I just decided to log on to see what was up. I did go to my account tab; then edit friends, then click on contacts under the far left menu. I see what "ppoon hound" mentioned. However, non of those contact numbers are even in my phone. So, I contacted a few FB friends and they all published their numbers to the account "willing". They actually added the numbers under their profile page. So, I don't thank the contacts your see have been taken out of your phone unless you have sync'd enabled on your blackberry, android etc. I would suggest you cross check the published numbers against your actual phone contact list. I'm quite sure we all have a few FB only friends (you know the people you haven't talked to since middle school) that are not listed in our phones but number is seeming to magically appear on FB. Then I would contact them and ask if they've made their number public. I think you would be surprised to know many people have.

Again, if you disable sync for phone contacts they wouldn't be able to sync anything. I've been using FB for months; toggling between hobby and personal accounts and I've not had any of my contacts sync'd. When I installed the FB app, I was asked to accept the "Terms and Conditions" and also whether I wanted to "ENABLE" sync. I chose not to enable sync and nothing has been sync'd from my phone or email accounts to FB.

To disable email and contacts sync, go the settings menu (normally from the home screen under menu options) > click on accounts and sync > scroll until you will see the Facebook icon (it will probably be after your email accounts). If sync is turned off, you don't have to do anything else. If sync is on, click on the FB account and uncheck "Sync Contacts". You probably unknowingly gave them permission to sync your contacts when you downloaded or started using the FB app. Facebook is not stealing your info and publishing it to the internet without any consent.
