The interpersonal exchange in gifting is lovely, yes.
The transient nature of these relations are as important as the eventual connections it provides, so I'm not uncomfortable with the idea of just any gift(then, also, I never view them that way, as just any gifts).
Atl, re: expectations, that's a good question, and makes me wonder how to convey "No, not necessarily" without being trite and obvious or worse, as if I don't mean it. And, agreed re: wine and books, etc., which is likely why gift pages began in the first place...manners.

Of course, I can see pointing to specific stores, too: I'm all good with anything Tiffany's so long as it isn't entry level, and I doubt a fella shall desire to ever bring a serving plate or pitcher to a lady, unless she asks! Seems failproof And we are dealing with men Lol.
Leah, yes I receive that impression as well. I like the idea of it, but the practice needs work(hence my questions).
