Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. The second mention was in defense of the first, not to explain away or repeat a joke.

That’s the full context, and obviously not a joke. Adding the interjection “for real” shows that he’s trying to convince the audience this was something that actually happened. It didn’t.
