Minimum wage really represents a huge philosophical difference between conservatives and liberals.

Liberals think people should be given a minimum wage just for showing up.

Does anyone know why FDR created the minimum wage? It was 25 cents an hour and there were so many out of work people that companies could take advantage if so inclined. As World War II production kicked in there were very few people who worked for minimum wage. The minimum wage increased every so often and in the 1960s a family could actually live on the minimum wage. From that point on inflation started reducing the value of the minimum wage.

So...the government (through the fed) could work on reducing inflation thus increasing the value of the minimum wage or by passing laws forcing private companies to pay more of their money. The government is taking the easy way out again by passing along their failures to others. Still the number of people working for minimum wage is less than 2%.

If the minimum wage goes up then why hire a high school kid, when you can have an experienced worker with their own car, responsibilites, and is highly trainable. Sorry kids, the politicians dumped you with massive student loans and now you can't get a job because they priced you out of an entry level job.

I sound like more of a socialist than most of you, but I hate the minimum wage. It is not so much that I endorse socialism, it is that I detest half-assed capitalism. I don't believe you can regulate just one side of a system and have it remain functional. Either a minimum and a maximum, or neither.

"Bakers and their employers had the right to make any agreements they wanted about work hours, the court found." That sounds like a functioning court upholding capitalism. The flip side would be that every so often the betrodden workers get pissed and bludgeon some bakers. That sounds like functioning capitalism holding court. It's a cycle.
