You can have a phone number for each gmail account you have. Hide the app inside a folder, and it's much less of a liability than a separate phone, IMHO.

voice+ allows you to SMS through your regular SMS app and allows you to disable and enable easily. if your not rooted or jail broken, learn it and use it. much easier to hide stuff

Talkatone is a good app for using g voice. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to send and receive pics

Yep!, I use a separate phone stored in an off-site location. It is only turned on when I am at the safe location or traveling to a visit with a companion.
