you couldnt convince a north korean farmer, pittsburg steel worker, coal miner from appalachia or an IBM/VAX mainframe programmer that 2017 is better than 1977. likewise you couldnt convince a black guy to go back to 1950s america. everyone has their own reality depending on whether they're upwardly mobile or heading the other way.

In order to improve and advance, older industries naturally become obsolete. Before that happens, we depend on those industries and the people working in them. When we stop depending on the industry we tell the people working in it,"tough luck. You need to retrain." We need to do better to take care of people we depended on. Had every 23 year old miner/stealer decided to retrain in 1977 when they had it in them to do so, we would have made a HUGE program to incentivize going into those industries.now At 55 and 60, we tell them to piss off basically.
Everyone else goes on with life while the miner watches and is all but helpless now.
