Do you think the World is getting Better or Worse Overall?

Much of it has to do with te pace of change. Technology and A.I. are getting close to critical mass. Evolution can't keep up with the pace of science and technology. They are the new religion and celebrity the God. Parents have become secondary educators in all things including work ethics and morality.

Google commercials for Watson. A.I. is replacing our need for rational thought. We have become "the tool of our tools". Humans ability to adapt is what got us this far, now our lack of ability to adapt as quickly tech. is growing has put mankind behind the 8 ball. In less than a generation my education has become obsolete.

When A.I. does reach critical mass we had better have figure out a way to harness it, or it will harness us.

For better or worse humanity is fast approaching a crossroad, let's just hope we aren't moving to fast to choose the right path.

you couldnt convince a north korean farmer, pittsburg steel worker, coal miner from appalachia or an IBM/VAX mainframe programmer that 2017 is better than 1977. likewise you couldnt convince a black guy to go back to 1950s america. everyone has their own reality depending on whether they're upwardly mobile or heading the other way.

In order to improve and advance, older industries naturally become obsolete. Before that happens, we depend on those industries and the people working in them. When we stop depending on the industry we tell the people working in it,"tough luck. You need to retrain." We need to do better to take care of people we depended on. Had every 23 year old miner/stealer decided to retrain in 1977 when they had it in them to do so, we would have made a HUGE program to incentivize going into those industries.now At 55 and 60, we tell them to piss off basically.

Everyone else goes on with life while the miner watches and is all but helpless now.

All goes back to the pace of change in the modern world. Evolution takes generations for meaningful change to occur. Science, technology and A.I. generations are about six months! In 1977 you'd have a hard time convincing anyone how much the world has changed. Here as sit typing on my IPad, I couldn't have imagined 9/11 on 9/10. As ordinary people we are still playing "catch up" in world that past us by.

I never understood why our congress doesn't require for-profit companies that outsource to fund higher ed or vocation based institutions for retraining displaced workers. oh wait, that would be too rough on the bottomline for these poor corporations and they might not fund reelection campaigns of our congressmen. it's much easier to demonize immigrants and minorities to win elections while doing little to nothing to stem the rot of middle class america.

also I cant help thinking these folks could have easily built themselves a second career if they had learnt to save prudently during the boom cycle when they were making good money. dont know any steel workers but I know a few folks that made the bank in offshore rigs that are now facing ruin all because they couldnt be bothered to plan for tough times. financial education should be mandatory starting in elementary, too many of our children grow up irresponsible and never learn to save or plan ahead.

Add Chinese American doctors of United flights to the list of people the world isn't better for.

If they do, teachers can't correct it using red because it may hurt students feelings.

It's like that commercial where the kid's team beats every team and the dad looks at the trophy that reads, "participation" with complete dismay.

I'm totally on board with this statement. While they may have received 'participation' types of awards at ages 5 to 8, from age 9 on school and sports was MUCH more competitive than prior generations. The 'kids today are snowflakes' talking point is a myth.

Truth be told, the generation that seems to be slackers are baby boomers, who have made empathy and understanding bad words. At the same time crying about how mistreated they are by the mean immigrants and impovered people. How competitive can you be if your getting your ass kicked by the most vulnerable and powerless people in society?
