It is an agreeable & quiet neighborhood, small townish in feel, with quite a few pretty old houses & lots of trees. It is pretty central and therefore convenient for the greatest possible number of Houstonites. It's just off a highway, which makes it faster to get there.
There are businesses mixed into the residential areas because it has no zoning restrictions. Lots of real estate and law offices operate out of houses that have been converted to office space.
So it doesn't look suspicious to have cars coming and going, and the neighbors aren't nosy anyway.
Plus, like Raphael said, it's convenient to everything. There's lots of places to eat near by, places to shop for antiques, and a CVS on Yale around 19th for easy trips for supplies! (and I used to find female condoms there) And there's a "toy and video and lingerie" type place on i-10 between Heights Blvd and Montrose. It's a great area.
