1. Cops treat ALL traffic stops as potential DUI stops.
2. It's a game. If you were speeding, and that's it, it is probably best to answer simple questions.
3. But, in reality, it is better to not respond to anything but requests for DL and Insurance.
4. If a cop asks "have you been drinking?" the correct answer is "what is the purpose of the stop, officer?"
5. If the questions keep coming say "Wow, I really appreciate that you have a job to do, but I have this real asshole for a lawyer, and he told me to never answer questions or consent to a search. Am I free to go?"
6. ALWAYS BE POLITE.
7. Another good answer is "Officer, I am pretty sure you have stopped me for a traffic violation, and if so, I am pretty sure I am going to contest the ticket, so it is probably best if I don't answer any questions without my lawyer here. You understand, I'm sure. The court room can be a funny place."
8. Usually, the ticket will be written and you can go on your way. If there is any stall or delay: "Am I being detained? Am I free to go?"
