The first is the silly and arrogant phrase "American Exceptionalism". If you get a surge of pride and start buying into that concept, you can buy into any sort of scheme where we bankrupt ourselves trying to show a resentful world the "correct and moral" way to do things.

The second is "multiculturalism". It is an ungovernable mess without a heavy hand of government making sure every aggrieved group gets treated fairly, and gets some government money as compensation.

I guess you missed all the experts (why not, it works for Al Gore) who say that Islam is religion mixed with politics. Islamists (those who want a caliphate) use Islam as a cohesive force combined with the political will to spread with death throughout the world.
