I took nuclear physics from a nuclear scientist who worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago. He asked me to read and prepare a "book report" on a well-known thick book on thermal nuclear war for my final grade. Your conclusion is consistent with mine. It has been my understanding that most of the scientists on the Project did not want "the bomb" to be used and those were ONLY atomic bombs they dropped on Japan.
People talk about it and don't have a clue. And they talk loosely.
