Yes, I do have to type them in to log in. It actually caused a bit of trouble for me logging into chat, as the chat client doesn't recognize the special characters. Took me a minute to realize I could type it without the special characters and I can log in just fine.

I have the international keyboard setting turned on for my keyboard, so that makes things less complicated. But on my phone, it's even simpler as I just hold down the "e" key and I have a choice of special characters at my fingertips.
