The reason most college degreed people earn more is because they are smarter and went into a field that required a college degree. That's "just the average."You are right. Today's world is much different than that of even 20 years ago. I entered the business world as a computer programmer and you definitely needed a college degree to initially enter the field. I have no idea if today that is true. You have to somehow prove your job skills when applying for any job.
Using Michael Dell is a bad example because like Bill Gates he did go to college just didn't graduate. They also entered a newer field that didn't have a lot of "barriers to entry."
Today if you want to learn computer programming you can just watch youtube videos or other computer based learning tools. You don't have to go to the university and pass CALC 301 which you'll never use. I laughed at this woman who said that she was paying $40K a year so her daughter could be a music major at TCU. I have no problem with paying for a college degree if the degree is required to get the person into their dream job, whether that be in business or music. I took many courses in college that did not help me reach my business goals but were very enlightening and fun. Anthropology was my favorite. Geography. The sciences. College is not just about educating you in a specific field so that you are prepared to enter the job market.
