Austin will always be a government and university town with low salaries for the rank and file.

Actually EXNYer, you're believing the negative hype . The bars are all full to bursting. SXSW Interactive drew a record attendance , more than 30,000 registrants, and there are more than 100 "official" stages in downtown alone. That doesn't count the hundreds of unofficial venues (two of which have hosted ME).

Every rehearsal studio in town is rented. Every cheap motel full. And that's just with musicians.

Unless I HAVE to be down there, I'll stay away. Bur SXSW is a worldwide phenomenon and keeps getting bigger.

Plus the Rodeo just started.

Commercialism? LMAO! Taxpayers HATE tourism! Small business REALLY hate tourism!

sorry bro. You're calling sour grapes on this one.

And, for a sleepy little government and university town, Austin has managed to grow a little high tech industry ... Just a little mind you, LL!

But the "selling points" you are boasting - bars full to bursting, 30.000 registrants, 100 stages - are, to SOME people, a defect not a feature. Some of the "purists" like their arts festivals (music, movies, whatever) to be small and elite. Once everybody goes there, it's ruined - in their eyes.

The Sundance Film Festival was recently bashed by its own founder, Robert Redford. He was talking about withdrawing. He made a rather pointed comment about Paris Hilton - wondered what the hell she was doing there:

Well, you know... they're ALL welcome to come down here, eat our food, sleep in our hotels, watch our Formula One racing, dig our music and fuck our whookers!

There are people here, BTW, lamenting the fact that SXSW has grown to such proportion! I remember attending a "radio programmers conference" in the late 70s that eventually evolved into SXSW. (Got laid a bunch for free back then!) There were a few good shows and a lot of recreational activities.

Since then, I've had the pleasure of participating in SXSW as a musician four or five years now. It's a hoot for me. Then I go back to my home in the hills and wait for the dipshits to leave town!

But if you're interested in small and intimate, you'll find a LOT of that in the ATX as well. We host ACL (huge/mini-Woodstock), but also have Fun Fun Fun Fest, Honk!TX (which is coming up) and the Texas Community Music Festival (also coming up.) LOTS of intimate musical explosions that only draw 10-20,000!

Let the Natural play ball. We're playing MUSIC here in the ATX!

WOOOOO!

Pssst! If you're not all in on the musical party thing, then go to Wichita. I'm sure you can find some peace and quiet there... LMAO!

WOOOOOO!!!!!

(Staying in tonight, btw!)

I hear there are a few "meat inspectors" in Houston.
At least one in Kansas and the weird one in Chicago.

Rumor has it... they frequent this joint. Originally Posted by UB9IB6

Salt Lick? Good for some stuff. But there are many others in town that do a better job all round. On TEXAS barbecue, that is. You can keep that candied shit away!

I didn't read this thread the first time I saw it because I thought it was dedicated to Assup...fortunately I was incorrect.
