I'll toss in "I Can See for Miles" and "Listening to You" [finale from Tommy] not because they're better than any number of the others that have been named, but because I think they at least deserve mention.
They may well have been a better live band than a recording group (so long as Keith and John lived), but that's as much a testimony to their prowess live than their lack of quality studio stuff. Interestingly, Townshend said a number of years ago that people were always asking him whether or not "The Who" or "The Kinks" had produced the stronger body of work (after the Beatles and the Stones.) He gave the edge to Ray Davies and the Kinks.
