So called free speech advocates vote to censure...

Gentlemen thread is about free speech and censorship not who lies
Awww thanks, 1pitt!

Time to roll out my DeNiro imitation:

Word of advice: If you're going to quote another eccie poster, use the quote button or have the balls to call him out by name. I'm lustylad, remember? You have my permission to address me directly. Just say "Lustylad, you recently said..." How hard is that?

And just to clarify, I'm not a republican. Not that it's any of your fucking business but I'm actually registered as a democrat. Why would you presume to know my political affiliation? Good grief!

As for the substance of your OP, it's obvious you don't understand the difference between "censure" and "censor". Two very different words with two entirely different meanings. If you censure someone you are merely expressing your disapproval of something they said or did. If you censor someone you are permanently silencing them.

Rashida Tlaib is still free to spout her hate-filled, anti-Semitic tirades from the Capitol steps. And members of Congress are still free to express and register their disapproval of her evil, wacko support for the genocidal baby beheaders of Hamas.

Far from wanting to censor her, I suspect many Republicans are really trying to egg her on. Then they can run campaign ads showing her spouting her ugly, slobbering, Jew-hating rhetoric and say "see? this is what you get when you vote for democrats!"

There is a quote that is arguably attributed to Voltaire. Do you agree with it? Do you even understand the nuances of free speech and our First Amendment rights?

It seems that you're the one who's made an erroneous assumption. I'm very familiar with what the word censure means and specifically as it pertains to congress. It's nothing more than a slap on the wrist, but a slap on the wrist by the right wing members of our congress because of something she said. Clearly not in the spirit of the fist amendment that they claim to love. In fact, the four republicans who voted against it did so due to freedom of speech concerns.
trump might be the biggest opponent of the 1st Amendment we've ever seen in public office. Teargassing peaceful protesters? Banning certain journalists from White House press conferences because they ask "nasty questions"? We've never seen a POTUS who hates the 1st Amendment more.
Looks like the Republicans in congress hate freedom of speech. They only want people to be free to say the things that they want to hear.

Perhaps you should ask the OP if this thread has anything to do with Adolf? Originally Posted by lustylad

I am all for free speech but have some reservations for those who sell free speech as factual speech.

The "alternative facts" folks ruined it for everyone....but they are still allowed to say their peace, just as fact checkers say theirs.

The last democrat I voted for is... none of your fucking business! You sure are a nebby one, aintcha? I'll just say this - IMHO Pennsylvania democrats need to put forth more candidates like Conor Lamb and fewer idiots like Summer Lee.

When it comes to the First Amendment/free speech, where do YOU draw the line?

Back in 2002, Osama bin Laden wrote a disgusting, highly offensive and disingenuous “Letter to America” purporting to justify the slaughter of almost 3,000 of your fellow American citizens on 9/11 by the medieval miscreants he had trained in al queda. The letter was recently circulated on TikTok approvingly by a so-called “influencer” and received over 20k likes before it was taken down.

U cool wid dat, 1pitt?

I've not conflated anything. When the government votes to censure someone specifically because of what they've said, it's akin to a form of censorship. If she was censured for fraud or something like that, then it would have nothing to do with censorship, but she was censured purely for exercising free speech, so your accusation is invalid.

Bin Laden's letter doesn't have much to do with this discussion, but I recently re-read it, and I don't see why it should be hidden. I don't think that it qualifies under the "fire in a movie theater" exception. Here, maybe i can tie it in to the topic: This thread is about the hypocrisy amongst the right wing self proclaimed free speech advocates. They claim to be about free speech but only want people to be free to say things that they agree with. Similar to your take on the Bin Laden Letter.
Nobody hates the 1st Amendment more than today's GOP. There's never been a POTUS hate the 1st Amendment (as well as the rest of the Constitution) more than trump. These cunts have a lot of fucking nerve even mentioning the 1st Amendment.
