Capt. James Kirk is in command

"Merrimack was still in ordinary during the crisis preceding Lincoln's inauguration. Soon after becoming Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles took action to prepare the frigate for sea, planning to move her to Philadelphia. The day before the firing on Fort Sumter, Welles directed that "great vigilance be exercised in guarding and protecting" Norfolk Navy Yard and her ships. On the afternoon of 17 April, the day Virginia seceded, who also Engineer in Chief B. F. Isherwood managed to get the frigate's engines lit off; but the previous night secessionists had sunk lightboats in the channel between Craney Island and Sewell's Point, blocking Merrimack. On the 20 April, before evacuating the Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy burned Merrimack to the waterline and sank her to preclude capture.

The Confederacy, in desperate need of ships, raised Merrimack and rebuilt her as an ironclad ram, according to a design prepared by Lt. John Mercer Brooke, CSN. Commissioned as CSS Virginia 17 February 1862, the ironclad was the hope of the Confederacy to destroy the wooden ships in Hampton Roads, and to end the Union blockade which had already seriously impeded the Confederate war effort."

No need to be a wanker. You think you're the only fucker with access to info.

I guess you really aren't capable of any exchange of information with human beings at all, are you, shit-swallower Massa Cholo... Originally Posted by Yssup Rider

I've lost track of who is who is this stupid pissing contest (that has nothing to do with the OP) but once a ship is renamed it is a different ship. This comes from someone who served on a ship that had it's name changed. The USS Biddle looked a lot like the USS Ricketts but the Ricketts was a different ship and it didn't have to be rebuilt. So I say that the USS Virginia is not the same ship as the CSS Merrimack.

Great. You said it. So shall it be.
Actually it doesn't, you enormously ignorant, racist, cum-gobbling golem fucktard, HDDB, DEM. The U.S.S. Merrimack was a three-masted screw frigate, you enormously ignorant, racist, cum-gobbling golem fucktard, HDDB, DEM. Originally Posted by I B Hankering

Merrimack was a three-masted screw frigate.

She was ordered to be destroyed, to prevent her from falling into Confederate hands, when the Confederates threatened to overrun the Naval base where she was docked. The destruction order was bungled. Her lower hull and machinery were salvaged, and she was rebuilt into an ironclad, CSS Virginia.

As CSS Virginia, she engaged USS Monitor, in the Battle of Hampton Roads, in the first ironclad-on-ironclad duel. Their engagement was inconclusive: neither one could hurt the other.

Most of the popular history books describe the duel as Monitor v. Merrimack, not Monitor v. Virginia.

Merrimack nor the C.S.S. Virginia was sunk in ship-to-ship combat.

BTW, a modern variation on that theme is the "Liaoning, which is the first aircraft carrier commissioned into the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Originally laid down as the Admiral Kuznetsov class multi-role aircraft carrier Riga for the Soviet Navy, she was launched on December 4, 1988 and renamed Varyag in 1990. The stripped hulk was purchased in 1998 by the People's Republic of China and towed to Dalian Shipyard in north eastern China. After being completely rebuilt and undergoing sea trials, the ship was commissioned into the PLAN as the Liaoning" (wiki). The Varyag no longer exists: only the Liaoning.

I'll reserve judgement until they complete sea trials. A smaller crew means less survivability. In 1981 we sailed with the NATO fleet including the Dutch ship De Ruyter. Larger than us but with half the crew. We asked them what would happen if they got damaged by a missile or shell. They said that they really didn't know. It depended on how much of their automated equipment still worked.
The Zumwalt (an unfortunate name) is truly a light cruiser or a cruiser in size and displacement but with a frigate crew.

Once the ship is damaged, it won't be very stealthy. If it could keep up with the fleet (which would send it as many people as it required to save it), that's one thing. They won't slow down for it and endanger the other ships. If it was alone or unable to keep up, a fuel/air saturated hull would leave nothing to be captured, raised, or studied.

Picture a battle group of these with a bunch of attack subs and satellite radar coverage. Add a dash of GPS and some long range drones and you're cooking with gas.

Like I said. Pretty cool ship.

I guess you don't understand how sea trials are conducted on a newly launched ship. They are slightly different from regular sea trials but then again, I doubt you know too much about sea trials other than what you read.
