I do not believe immigration decisions should be made based on which party the person is likely to vote for. I believe it should be made on who can contribute to the country -- engineers, doctors, scientist, investors, entrepreneurs and skilled workers in areas where we have shortages should be at the front of the line. He writes that these workers often do jobs that many of us believe we benefit from in the form of lower prices, safer streets or cheaper energy, but don't really much want to think about. The work tends to fall to people with fewer opportunities, he writes. And when we hear about ill effects associated with these jobs, like COVID infections from poultry slaughterhouses or inhumane treatment of the incarcerated, we often condemn the workers rather than the exploitative system in which they work.
Who the hell is gonna pick the fruits and veggies? American non-skilled workers?I think we need guest workers to pick the fruits and veggies. This is very important because Americans eat too much red meat and processed foods, and we're getting fat and unhealthy.
(Now that's some sarcasm for your ass Chiquito!)

They should not be allowed to become citizens however unless they're going to vote for Republicans.
Honestly, you're right. It's a win/win situation. Americans don't want to do this work. Foreigners do, and it's a great source of income for them and their families. And I agree with the article, there should be controls so they're not exploited. Originally Posted by Tiny

It's pretty much a year-end "gig". Give them citizenship. And don't be surprised when they vote for those who protect their interests.
We need a serious Labor Party.
Your middle paragraph roused me. Originally Posted by eccieuser9500

I'd agree with that if the company had a profit sharing program. Not exploitative.
“We find that an increase in low-skilled immigrants affects the vote of U.S. counties in different ways,” the authors write in a new paper, “but in general tends to push voters towards the Republican Party. Non-urban, low-skill counties with high local public spending strongly increased their Republican vote share in response to low-skilled immigration.” The authors associate the GOP with more-restrictive immigration policies, saying that’s what it usually championed in the 20 years they consider.
I believe he's got a clue, it's just that reality doesn't fit his narrative as well as he'd like it to. All of the 9/11 terrorists entered the USA through airports, and immigration officials looked at their passports.
I have foreign friends and business associates who regularly "come back and forth into the country on a visitor's visa ... with impunity." One is from a third world country and has been doing it for over 20 years. Typically if you're a decent type with ties to your home country and able to support yourself financially, you get a 10 year multiple entry visa that lets you come and go at will.
Now there is more than a grain of truth to the Trumpsters' fears. Yes, there have been some terrorists who came across the Mexican border illegally, although I can't recall any having actually committed violent terrorist acts in the USA.
And there's the other biggie, COVID. Dr. Ivonne Lopez Lopez in McAllen, Texas was on Doctor Radio the other evening and said a group of 1500 undocumented immigrants were tested in her area and 20% were positive. Now this is undoubtedly an exceptional case. And even if it weren't, we've got 140,000 people testing positive for COVID every day. There's no way these people coming right now from Central America and Mexico are more than a drop in the bucket.
Now I'd like to have more controls on the border to staunch the flow of undocumented immigrants, except of course for those from Vietnam and Cuba who tend to vote for Republicans. And giving them a COVID test and the vaccine when they enter makes a lot of sense too. But come on, how big of a problem is this in the scheme of things? The Trumpsters want you to believe it's huge, in some small part because they're looking for scapegoats.
And as to LexusLover, hell if I know what he's thinking. He says he's a Democrat, and the majority of undocumented people coming into America will vote for Democrats if they're ever naturalized. So I'm not sure what his problem is.
And because the sarcasm in my post is subtle, and some here (not you Blackman) have trouble recognizing sarcasm when it hits them in the face, I do not believe immigration decisions should be made based on which party the person is likely to vote for. I believe it should be made on who can contribute to the country -- engineers, doctors, scientist, investors, entrepreneurs and skilled workers in areas where we have shortages should be at the front of the line. The 20% number sounds reasonable. 80% does not. Sometimes you have people herded together like cattle in trucks, and then the same thing happens again when they're housed in immigration facilities. So I imagine it wouldn't be hard to end up with 20% infected. Thinking about it, I may have been wrong when I said that must have been an exceptional case, the one cited by Dr. Ivonne Lopez Lopez. Twenty percent may be more like the average right now.
My democrat fiend and I were discussing this problem at the border and I mentioned that many untested immigrants were being released into the country and he says "no, not true". He says that what he has heard and that of course Fox news was wrong in their reporting, that nobody but nobody that tested positive was being released, they were all being treated and quarantined. I said sorry, I don't believe that for a minute but at this point, who the fuck knows what the facts are any more. What I do know is that positive or not, the border is a fucking mess and it is AGAIN, 100% Joe Biden's fault. Just like Afghanistan, the border didn't have to happen like this and you could hear it in Mayorkas's voice when he didn't know he was being recorded that he knows they all fucked this up bad and that we came close to, as he put it, "breaking point at the border". Breaking point? Shit that point was reached weeks ago. The border is broken and shows no sign of being fixed but that was the plan all along.
Yeah it seems unreal that the Biden administration would fuck up this bad solely to acquire future votes but I wouldn't put anything past these people. They hate America the way it is and want to dramatically change it to something I sure as hell don't want to see.
Some guy on MSNBC summed up the Democrats position when he said that just getting a few thousand Afghan's out that helped us over the years wasn't enough, we should be giving refugee status to "millions" he said and he meant it. Then add a few million Haitians, Venezuelans, throw in a million or so from Guatemala and a couple million more from El Salvador and then maybe we'll have the America these Democrats want.
And it isn't about "Brown people" as Lemon and Cuomo are saying over at MSNBC. Color doesn't make a damn bit of difference. It is culture and education and ability to do more than pick fruit and clean a hotel room that matters. When you see hundreds hanging around the Home Depot parking lot looking for day work, you have to ask yourself, is this any way to run an immigration process? No, it isn't.

Let me get this straight , We ( puddens) knew it was a bad plan ( blame on Big T ) but for 6 months we did nothing , Then we Pulled the plug overnight ( and its the Intell bad) . And of couse the agfeans faultBig T had a plan to leave AG. It was sooner rather than later. He got voted out so he did not get a chance to execute it.
At lease Biggie T s plan was to evac non-combatants first not after the fall ???????
