Summers: I Haven‘t Seen Any ‘Serious Support‘ for Biden‘s Claim Oil Companies Are Profiteering

During an interview aired on Friday’s edition of Bloomberg’s “Wall Street Week,” economist, Harvard Professor, Director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama, and Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton Larry Summers responded to President Joe Biden’s tweet accusing oil and gas companies of padding their profits by keeping gas prices high by stating, “there’s nothing that would support that in the president’s tweet, and I haven’t seen any analysis coming out of the administration, or anyplace else, that provided serious support for that.”

More dots... not fresh but indicative of a reality that existed pre-Ukraine as part of the reckoning and rethinking of strategy amongst the major domestic oil producers.

Larry Summers knows as much about rockets and feathers as anyone that watches these markets routinely. He also knows where prices should be at these crude prices if the market were operating as it was pre-COVID

Bam, saw a mix of 4.399's and 4.299's in West Mifflin, Homestead, Monroeville, Green Tree and near Robinson. Heavier on the 2's, 3:1 ratio

Yet you keep finding the most expensive places to fill up in town. Hell, if I filled up in Bloomfield today it would have been 4.199

I don't. Not by any means. If I had, I'd be wasting gas to get to the 3.99's and 4.06's that aren't near me.

Or buying a Costco or Sam's Club membership to get to 4.15 or 4.13

More than just a station here and there for that average to be where it's at.

I'm aware of rockets and feathers. I know that BP doesn't own the gas in the pump on a BP branded station. And about discounting the gas to hock the convenience store inventory, get turns and drive the margin. Which is why you'll see a 4.09, 4.19, 4.29 and 4.39 on the same 3 mile stretch

But you still haven't figured out what I'm doing yet.

$4.30 average

Oh, that’s the average between 4.39 and 4.29

On the evening that the PA average hit its highest point, those were the prices on 51 from Nobles to Greenlee.

Today, Sam's Club in Tarentum was 4.09. Butler was 4.13

Costco in Homestead was 4.15. The Getgo was 4.29. The BP on the way to Hazelwood Bridge was 4.39

But sure, let's agree you probably drive more than me. I give zero fucks about that

Do you get ketchup with your fill up”?

BAHAHAHAHA

The 4.19 BP in Canonsburg and 4.19 Sunoco in Cecil are independents. I don't consider the 3.99 in New Castle or the 3.99 Citgo in Aliquippa to be close enough to matter for my purposes. Quippa, maybe, but NC isn't really Pgh metro area

Point is, you love your anecdotes. But the average is the average because most aren't clustering around 4.39

And the average between 4.29 and 4.39 isn't 4.30 unless you're using a weighted average (you're not) or you flubbed your math (you did)
