now let's see what that violin bow can really do.. the story behind jimmy page using a violin bow is mostly based on the Yardbirds where once Page finally joined (remember, Clapton had recommended Page over Beck but Page had session contracts to fulfill) so Beck got the gig to follow Clapton in the Yardbirds. Later, Page joined at first at bass then quickly the dual guitar dynamic between Beck and Page was born.

as the story goes, Page was friends with McCallum Sr, from his session days and after Beck had supposedly taken a Fender Strat, with a tremolo bar, strung it with piano wire, tuned it to some odd tuning then came out and played some totally monster guitar solo. then Page had to top it, and he couldn't. he mentioned all the things Beck had done to McCallum Sr who first suggested using a violin bow on an electric guitar. the rest is ...
