"White Bird" is a 1969 song by the San Francisco-based group It's a Beautiful Day, written and produced by violinist David LaFlamme. His then wife Linda was a co-writer. The presentation is a duet between David and Patti Santos, the group's singer who died at 40 in a 1989 auto accident.
The song was written in Seattle, Washington, where the band's manager Matthew Katz had relegated the band to improve their act before he would book them into San Francisco nightclubs. Living in the attic of a Victorian house across the street from Volunteer Park with an inadequate food allowance and no transportation in dreary, rainy Seattle, the song came out of depression from their circumstances and yearning to be free. The song's repeated chorus is, "White bird must fly or she will die."
It was the band's signature song and the 6:11 album version became a staple of FM radio. It was initially released on the band's debut, eponymous album It's a Beautiful Day. The album rose to #47 on Billboard's Top LPs American albums chart, led primarily by the featured song. A nearly 10 minute long version of the song also appeared on the band's 1972 live album It's a Beautiful Day at Carnegie Hall. The song later appeared on nine compilation albums and four more retrospective albums released by the band.
With the popularity of the album track, a single version, shortened and remixed for radio airplay was released October 4, 1969. It rose to as high as #3 the week of October 18, 1969 on San Francisco radio station KYA. The single never reached a wide national audience and only made it to #118 on Billboard's Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart.
In 2001, Vanessa-Mae released a version of the song that reached #66 on the UK Singles Chart.
The 1982 television series Knight Rider featured the song in an episode named for the song during the first season.
The song was used in the soundtrack of Uncharted Waters, the 2013 documentary about the life of surfer Wayne Lynch............Eddie
