Im sorry I made an assumption that was incorrect. I was under the impression you were implying this was an active US policy and DoD run (supply/chain of command/funded/etc) involvement in the war....these guys were not on the US military payroll....so "US unit" is kind of a misnomer...no US uniforms....not fighting under the American flag....no US commanders, etc......"US unit" here implies something more akin to American mercenaries. Claire Chennault organized a similar unit, The Flying Tigers, to fight alongside the Chinese before the U.S. entered WWII. It was done with the tacit approval, a wink and an nod, of FDR.
