Well I would recommend the Crazy Cajun for cajun food but it closed down some years ago. As did the Happy Cajun shortly there after. So now I need some good bayou cookin'.
The former owner was a coonass who knew how to cook. The BEST stuffed rib-eye steak I've ever had. No one marinated and cooked it like him. A tear just came to my eye. His boudin and etouffe were off the charts too.
So any recommendations for Cajun food?
Remember people "hole in the wall" or independantly owned.

Another spot right down the street is called Gillhoolies (SP?) if you go there try the Shrimphoolies.
Great place. No kids allowed.

Oyster Gilhooley is by far my favorite dish there.

No one has mentioned The Palace of Cindertasha. WTF?
Someone mentioned Thelma's that used to be downtown. They actually moved it further in the 3rd Ward. It's now on the corner of Scott and Southmore. The same thing happened with This Is It, for those who have been looking for it. They've made their 4th move. They're now in 3rd Ward as well and not 4th Ward/Midtown anymore. This Is It Soul Food moved near the corner of Blodgett and Ennis, in the same spot where Family Cafe' used to be.

Some, that are familiar with This Is It, may remember the original location on W. Gray @ Gillette. That's the restaurant where Jada Pinkett-Smith worked in the movie Jason's Lyric. Then they moved twice further down W. Gray ending up near Cyclone Anaya's....then the move to the current location in 3rd Ward.

I haven't been to the original Barnaby's, but I've been to Baby Barnaby's on Fairview and the food is damn good!
This Is It is a great restaurant, at least when they move they increase in size. There's another restaurant in that general area called Alfreda's Cafeteria that also has some great soul food. The oxtails there are great.

Has anyone tried the restaurant in the back of the big Jerusalem Grocery on Hillcroft?
They make an awesome goat stew with okra, tomatoes, and basmati rice. Everything on their menu is pretty good and the kitchen is always clean.

There's this one soul food joint on Reed Rd., forgot the name of it.

Market Street, downtown on Travis at Congress across from that new lil' park that just opened up. That was my Tuesday evening hangout a few years ago.
