Number one thing to keep in mind is that over the counter products along with all herbal supplements are not regulated nor require to follow FDA standards. Consumers have a belief that if it's sold at a pharmacy such as Walgreens or a store like HEB then it has to safe, not true at all.
Viagra and Revatio for example are pharmaceutically engineered medications that work by specifically targeting blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis when you become sexually aroused.
The herbal alternatives do not target specific areas nor produce a single effect mainly in part because they are a mixture of different products, hence the erratic side effects experienced. A lot of the products that have been banned have not been banned because of adverse events experienced but because upon chemical evaluations they were found to have undeclared chemical agents in them.
Taking products with undeclared agents can especially be dangerous if you have allergies to certain agents or taking other medications that can cause a bad reaction when combined with these unknown agents.
In short this is why these supplements are frowned upon. I can get into more detail if you want but it all basically boils down to the points I just shared.
BUT if you insist on still taking these products then my number one advice is to avoid taking concurrently with other enhancers, over the counter products, or blood pressure products as it can drastically drop your blood pressure.
