Am I missing something?

The incident was justification for a Congressional resolution that LBJ used to expand the SE Asia conflict. ABOUT 50 YEARS LATER it was revealed the incident didn't happen ... it was fabricated to support the expansion of the "war"!
At the time I thought the NV was "out of their minds" and that something smelled. A close confidant was a PIO in the Navy at the time and that incident as well as the fire on a carrier (the one upon which John McCain allegedly served) on which he was stationed ... thought those incidents didn't smell right....he knew first hand the carrier fire wasn't as reported...but he was silenced.
The point: Unfortunately, our government doesn't always shoot straight with the public and some factions don't adequately and fully inform the final decision-makers with details upon which to make healthy and/or resolving decisions. "We" don't hear about it until years later, if not decades later. We end up getting results like Watergate.
An example of NON-INFORMING ... the Bay of Pigs fiasco. I heard the Stevenson UN report in real time and it sounded much like Powell's presentation to the U.N. regarding the Iraqi WMD program.
You are calling it a "virus," because the media called it a "virus"! It almost causes an image of a tadpole coming to mind .... swimming in body fluids .... as its spewed across the air space in front of us ... not even close. And that's is one reason people do not die OF "Covid-19" ...
In death investigations there are two goals upon which to focus ... (1) the cause & (2) the manner.
They are not to be confused. The "cause" is often tainted by social and political agendas. The manner is focused more on the externally applied mechanics that actually caused the body to cease functioning. The cell attacking the good cells in the body through the mouth, throat, and lungs path doesn't "cause" the death, but the immune system responding to the modification of the good cells destroys those cells and sends bad cells into the blood stream that attack other organs ... that is why older people and those with immune issues from diseases like sugar problems are susceptible ... and those with healthy immune systems ... like younger people have an extremely low mortality rate.
