Long before he met her he was found guilty of felony theft, and then he skipped out on his parole terms. Then he bought some guns under the table, again violating his parole.
So it's not like other than his dealings with her his hands are clean.
In her case, however, other than being a provider (perhaps under duress) there is no indication of her breaking the law.
This doesn't prove anything regarding the trafficking charges of course. But if background matters he's the one coming to bat with a couple strikes against him.

If the thing ever reaches trial, his lawyer will have a wealth of material fir cross examination of the victim.
