See, you could not tell me how to moderate without telling me who I should ban. the inability to comprehend simple instructions is lost on you and most of the rest of you except for that sweet lady that knows how to act like a gentleman. Originally Posted by The2Dogs

2Dogs,

I don't envy your role, and I'm impressed that you'd ask. That just generates more work for you- so I'm surprised that you'd be willing to offer to do the work, in order not to kill the board.

Since you asked - I'd deal with this the same way that works with most children. Immediate, visible, predictable, and consistent consequence for misbehavior.

Draw the line - and apply it immediately; as they say, even a flatworm knows to turn away from pain.
-
So for hypothetical example -someone initiated a thread entirely to mock a member - immediate, public, consequence- applied consistently. Someone pukes on a specific member 'out of the blue'- basically, YOU decide who initiated and that person gets dinged /immediately. Let others know, so we will quickly figure out where YOU draw the line- then watch people figure it out and it will stop.

If people feel that they have a deep, compelling, fulfilling need to be able to have internet arguments and 'fight' with someone on the internet (what the fuck is wrong with people-are these really men??), then maybe leave the litter box unmoderated-I don't know or care. I'm only read this thread because this (accidentally) began as a review.

However, it's emblematic- I just don't want to have every thread turn into a shit-show anymore. So when you've had enough, I'd suggest that what works with children will work here - you just lay out the 'new' rules-and then enforce them. SOMEONE will check if you're bluffing-but not many.

Or put another way from a different environment - sometimes if you really need them to behave, you have to shoot a hostage..
The trickiest part is figuring out how you should handle habitual line-testers. Folks who may not actually violate the written rules of the forum very often, but clearly are trying to bait others (fishing references seem to be the norm in this thread) into doing so.

You, as mods, need to do what's "sustainable". You can't devote the amount of time it would take to read and evaluate every post, obviously, but I'll bet even just dealing with the RTM posts is enough to make you question whether it's worth the effort.

Would you mind giving a rough metric on how many RTM posts you have to deal with on an average day?

Too much work for a mod. Fuck it - if 2Dogs thinks you're a 'habitual line tester', then he visibly, immediately, consistently hits them with the penalty. Yeah, maybe 5% of the time, he might frag an 'innocent'. But 95% of the time, he'll be right, we'll know it, the poster will know it, and it will be well-deserved. I can live with those odds.

What this does - it makes it easy on the mod, and frees them up from this chore because every reasonable poster will stay away from the line - and those that don't are 95% likely to be 'habitual line-testers'.

Someone like that is risking losing the mod altogether, which is a loss for everyone. It's not worth it.

Guys can't control themselves - then I'd say 2Dogs has a rep as pretty damn reasonable; we all live with his judgment, and behave. The alternative is the place just keeps getting worse and worse.
Things here are pretty smooth when tata isnt around. When you have one thing that's bothering everything, get rid of it permanently. Everything goes back to smooth and stays smooth. Just my opinion.

Thats gents for your input, as far as the sticky we are gonna hold of on that for now. Things have a way here to flush out sooner or later, everyone knows the guidelines here. The ones crossing that line know it or already have been warned.

In my opinion, the majority of the time that I've seen this forum turn into the shit show that it has been lately is when certain members are allowed back on the site. I don't know anything at all about this tatas guy (other than an apparent affinity for kumquats) but from my perspective he is an agitator and instigator. I have seen numerous posts and even on some of mine where he has made comments the only purpose for which are to irritate or pick fights. Some of which i have found Insulting and degrading to women. He also has provided completely false and misleading comments about providers - contrary to my own personal knowledge and information. I'm not defending anyone here, but IMO he asks for what he gets. Case in point, I believe this particular thread started as a result of Tatas making a comment on another thread telling people to start a new thread if they had comments about him ... begin the shit show.

For the last month, I have seriously considered stopping to use the site as it has become such a mess. I think one day I noticed that Tatas felt the need to comment on every single open thread, none of which were useful whatsoever. Anymore, It honestly makes me cringe when I see his name on a thread, but I also understand others' rights to speak their minds.

You guys (mods) clearly aren't stupid and I'm sure you can see where the problem lies here lately, but I'm not sure what can really be done to reign things in. What would be helpful, and it may already exist, is if there's a feature where we can block any and all posts made by particular members.
I have thought about this for a day or so. I'm simply going to play a game like they did on South Park. I'm just simply going to ignore tatasddd like the characters did to Eric Cartman In one episode. The actually ignored him as if he was dead. If we all did that, that would take away everything he wants and craves. He thrives on any attention he can get whether it be good or bad. That is going to drive him nuts if everyone did that because he can't get any sort of gratification from it.

They know that.
