Too much for here, but most of what I can sense from readings across history and religions of the world is that (most) metaphysical practices were made taboo and/or driven out at some point in time as a part of the physical effort to control and/or conquer people.
There has been a resurgence of these practices in trusted environments that can reveal the beauty and brilliance of the lost (repressed) arts of sacred and ritual sexuality.
