What Did 'Broadband Czar' Harris Do With the $40 Billion Appropriated for Internet?

The internet is government built.

Most of these rural communities have had internet access for as long as they want through telephone lines. So in the last 5-10 years high speed internet access has become more important than it was early on due to streaming of content. Private companies aren't interested in high speed internet (affordable) in small rural markets due to costs. This is where the government is covering the gap in costs to get the rest of America up to speed. Originally Posted by royamcr

Did DARPA invent the Internet?

The agency developed and furthered much of the conceptual basis for the ARPANET—prototypical communications network launched nearly half a century ago—and invented the digital protocols that gave birth to the Internet.

Rather than the internet being a piece of public infrastructure it became rapidly privatized by corporate interests trying to keep control of the new technology so that they could keep their monopoly on content under their control.

I don’t have a problem with private businesses controlling large content companies but the public missed out on a great opportunity to make and control the actual infrastructure that makes up the internet. Private companies should not have the control to determine who gets access and who does not.

the internet was online in the 90's. who was president in the 90's? Clinton.

why do you constantly blame republicans for ... anything? nonsense. corp America built the internet. if the Government had built it .. it would be a broken down Model T doa on the highway.

if the Government controlled it this website wouldn't exist. think about that. they'd "woke censor" everything. is that what you want?

you really think "the public" should own the internet? how much would the Government tax "the public" for that? your internet access while also being censored to an extent that would make "Big Brother" jealous would tax you 500 bucks a month for access.

nonsense .. nothing more than blind faith in "The Government knows best" bullshit.

i guarantee you if Republicans had put this into motion and four years later had nada to show for it you'd be screaming bloody murder over it. which you should be anyway.

Awe someone reading "TOWNHALL" a right wing fuck nut site.

Nowhere does it mention that this has until 2030 to happen. Funding has been allocated to states by need. This is on the states to roll out as needed. Originally Posted by royamcr

call me when it does. this will be Biden's "Solyndra on steroids"
Again it isn't even near 4 years. More like 2.5ish.

You know nothing about what happened with Solyndra. Pretty much what did them in was their competitors raw materials dropped 90% and they weren't competitive anymore.

The rural high speed internet will be built. Clock just started, check back in 5 years.

was the Government waiting for these companies to figure out how to do this when they've been doing it all along?

and you are right about Solyndra and yes i knew all about it and you omitted one thing .. they were criticized for faulty financial models that also contributed to their demise, despite raising all that cash.

Here is info on Texas, https://comptroller.texas.gov/progra.../funding/bead/

As of late Summer 2024, they are selecting a grant management vendor. The Texas State Government wouldn't slow-walk it, right?
