What is the percentage of people who own legal firearms who use them to commit crimes, when compared to the number of legal gun owners in toto? Originally Posted by CuteOldGuyThat's irrelevant.
Stand alone statistics are meaningless. There needs to be a comparison. How many gun murders are committed by legal gun owners? How many legal gun owners are there? 100 people die per day due to gunfire. Ok. Let's say that's true. That's two per state. Ok. How many were killed, not in self defense, by legal gun owners? If relatively few of the killings are caused by legal gun owners, then legal gun owners aren't the problem. If lawful gun owners are not the problem, leave them alone. The guns were locked up and the maniac broke into the safe or had the key without the knowledge of his mother (as far as we know). What she did was reasonable. If she had survived, would you prosecute her as well?
I'm not opposed to gun laws. I'm opposed to knee jerk gun laws based on emotion rather than reason. Just yesterday, or the day before, an 11 year old boy asked an 8 year old girl if he could pet her new puppy. She said no. He went in his house, and took a shotgun, legally purchased by his father, from an UNLOCKED gun safe, went outside and shot and killed her. In my opinion, the kid's father should be indicted for conspiracy to commit to murder. People who own guns have the duty to make sure they don't fall into the wrong hands. If a legal gun owner is careless with his/her gun, they should be charged with the same crime as the person who steals, or otherwise comes into possession of that gun commits. If I were a judge, I'd lock that 11 year old's father up for life, and put the kid in a decent mental institution. Fucking idiot. Leaving a gun safe unlocked with kids around.
I would also support minimum sentences for crimes committed with a gun. I'd go with 10 years. No plea bargaining. I'd add the sentence for the crime committed on top of that, and no concurrent sentences. Self defense or defense of others would be the only exceptions.
I'd support a Constitutional Amendment authorizing state registration of firearms with a provision that no person's gun could be confiscated without due process of law. Anyone caught with an unregistered gun - 10 years in prison.
This would not infringe on anyone's right to own whatever gun they want. They would just have to be responsible. That is not too much to ask.
I'm not going to punish innocent, responsible people for what a handful of crazies do. Originally Posted by CuteOldGuy

Maybe they should have taken them bowling.
I don't believe in mandatory registration. Voluntary if you want to safe guard your weapons if they are stolen but not mandatory. It's kind of like asking permission for a right. If you have to ask permission it is no longer a right but a privilege. No to registration and the possibility that someday some politician may not confiscate your weapons but outs you to the world which has happened many times. Plus, you have over 300 million weapons now that are not registered. What do you do with them? The way I see it is that if you give someone ten years for an unregistered gun then you ARE punishing innocent people. You shouldn't make laws that people don't want to obey under normal circumstances. Originally Posted by JD Barleycorn
