The Third Man, OMG!!! I've been on that Ferris Wheel in Vienna. I LOVE that movie!
Has anyone seen "Breaker Morant"? Great historical action movie. Based on the book "Scapegoats of the Empire".

Niv,

I almost added Vertigo last night. Can't beat that SF backdrop! One of Alfred's better ones.

Don't know how lesser known some of these are, and I view these things through acting, so I presume structure issues for a screenwriter would be the equivalent of embracing and working with odd structuring as an actor?

12 O'Clock High
Twin Peaks-structure
House of Yes
Gentleman's Agreement
Girl, Interrupted
The Ruling Class
The Glass Menagerie, Paul Newmans version
The Rope
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Repulsion-structure
Chinatown
Eyes of Laura Mars-structure
The Lion in Winter
Vertigo
Dog Day Afternoon
The Man with the Golden Arm-structure
American History X
The Graduate
Malcolm X

The cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover! Lol. Originally Posted by Nineveh

Some new, some old:

No Country for Old Men
The Cooler
Waking Ned Divine
The Spanish Prisoner
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Saving Grace
Slumdog Millionaire
District 9

I love your choices. Naked Lunch along with Raging Bull – please forgive me—are two movies that when I was much younger I actually walked out on. Later in life, I re-watched them and was amazed at them. Perspective is a funny thing.

I’ve recently been into indy films. Orson Wells and Me was particularly good. Originally Posted by OliviaHoward

There's some great movies on the list. All the talk about Crash got it moved up to number 1 on my Netflix que.

I'm surprised there's only 1 mention of Memento. Great movie.

And if you like Memento, try The Machinist. It's got Christian Bale in it before he was known by everyone. I think he lost 60lbs or something to make this movie.

Here's one of my all time favorites, Usual Suspects -- best "Oh Shit" ending ever.

And sticking with the "Oh Shit" ending, how about Angel Heart. It's 23 years old, but it's a period movie so it should play well today. Make sure you get the unedited version.

Another twisted ending you don't see coming in Identity.

Best western in a long time, 3:10 to Yuma. (Russel Crowe and Christian Bale)

Also recommended and not listed: Seven and Suicide Kings.

He's keeping the synopsis of the film under tight wraps...all he's said is it's a thriller set within the architecture of the mind. He's a bit of a Ridley Scott when it comes to actors in that he tends to have favourites lol. He uses Christian Bale and Michael Caine frequently..both of whom are good actors IMO. Bale in American Psycho was just chilling.

Foreign films: Downfall and Il Postino
Amelie
Snatch
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Gran Torino
Million Dollar Baby
Pulp Fiction
Forest Gump
Schindler's List
Life is Beautiful
Citizen Kane
Gone with the Wind
Blade Runner
The Godfather
The Lord of the Rings
City of God
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
Slumdog Millionaire
The Truman Show
True Lies

Just to name a few. But, there are so many movies I love I could go on and on all day.
"The Savages" and "Capote" for Philip Seymor Hoffman...not "Doubt".
I really enjoy pretty much anything that Gary Oldman is in too. He's very versatile and has some deep shit going on in that head of his that allows him to bring a real edge to his characters. Depp is quite versatile too.
I tend to take a lot more notice these days of who's directing too. Chris Nolan's intelligent storylines and contemporary directing can convince me to watch stuff that I normally wouldn't be interested in. I used to really like Ridley Scott but he needs to shake it up a bit now.
