You are right about the size of the virus. But virions don’t fly solo. They’re attached to other proteins, water vapor, other virions.. Still many of the droplets are indeed smaller than the holes in the mask. The virions in these tiny particles attach to the mask fabric because of electrostatic forces and diffusion, from the droplet onto the mask. Masks work for larger particles like a mechanical filter - the particles are larger than the holes. It’s the intermediate sized droplets that are most likely to pass through the mask

First, there's not much you can do about other people. You can protect yourself and the people around you better with an N95 or KN95 mask.

I don't think the cloth masks you see people wearing are 95% useless. Maybe more like 40% useless. But admittedly staying at least a few feet away from other people and using eye protection may be more effective. So why not do all three! Get some fashionable aviator goggles and you'll be a hit with women:

I don't get the analogy with Covid. Covid is real. When we look back on excess deaths in 2020, compared to past years, it's going to be apparent that at least 300,000 more people died than would have without the disease, just in this year. If we'd done nothing, our economy and the public purse still would have been badly hurt. This is apparent from looking at Sweden, which did little to combat the virus but whose economy was hit as hard as ours. People here aren't traveling, going out to restaurants or shopping as much, even though there aren't any restrictions on those activities, at least where I live, so you can't blame that on the government.

A virus is a strand of RNA or DNA surrounded by a protein sheath. It's much simpler than a cell. Viruses usually need to hijack cells to reproduce.
