Saying something stupid IS free speech. As I stated before, you don't get protection from the backlash. You just don't get to say anything you want, especially if it's dumb. The right hates people being able to marry the person they love or even the appearance of love between two people of the same sex.

The right HATES no one for marrying. The real argument is that same sex people cannot get married because that is not the definition of what marriage is. No, hate just the law, custom, and more's of society. I have said for going on 20 plus years, change the minds of people instead of forcing laws down their throats with a judge. You know the whole slippery slope thing that is playing out now (3 men get married to each in other in Thailand) about how people "in love" should be allowed to marry. Does that mean brother and sister? Sister and sister? Mother and son? Just last week someone lefties here were screaming that Guiliani had married his second cousin. Will you guys try to be consistent.
As for the OP, if you want to talk about saying dumb things then look towards Hollywood and the left. Specifically people like Alec Baldwin, Ed Schultz, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell and the rest (Gilligan's Island music). They have said some pretty offensive and untruthful things that were designed solely to hurt someone but they suffer no damage because they are on the left. Rush Limbaugh says that a black quarterback is getting a break from the sports press because he's black and you'd think that Limbaugh organized a lynching. He lost his position for that. Jimmy the Greek lost his job for saying something stupid. Bob Costas didn't lose his job because he was attacking the right. It all depends on who is being attacked.
