Have a story in your back pocket, but only tell the story if you are asked. By telling more than the person needs or wants to know, it makes it look like you're trying to cover something up.
Besides, it is not necessary to tell all of the story right off the bat. Why? Because by telling the entire made up story, if they want to know more, you're back to square one: fishing for bullshit filler.
