so i'm in costa rica-this spring break-to visit my peoples, and it's me and rory, back at it. we picked a hotel in san juan that had dice. but with the pandemic, they gave up offering craps. big bummer.
so we're walking by a casino and we can see an electronic roulette table in the back. so i turned to rory, and said, "you don't think.." and i trailed off. he said, "why not?" i'm like, "rory, roulette has a 5% house edge. that's like trying to win playing the field! it's not possible."
but he wasn't having it. so i said, "standard dice rules?"
he said yup.
ok lets see what happens. we put 100 each into a common bankroll.
standard rules are no bets unless we both sign off, and all profits and losses are shared equally.
so we sit down and start watching the board. it displays everything electronically.
i said, "you want to try anti-martingale?"
he said sure. so we'd wait for a pattern, jump on a 50/50 bet, hit twice before pressing the action. but we developed zero momentum using anti-Mart.
so i said fuck it, lets try a martingale. and then we started hitting. 2nd bet. 3rd bet. 2nd bet. 4th bet. it was nuts. we could cover 5 losses and that was it. (here's the backstory on Martingale vs AntiMartingale in "Math Class is now in session" (

as our bankroll starts going up, i start modifying our progressions. more aggressive. we got up to 290 then 320 then 350.
i followed the rule of 3s. no big bets until a pattern of 3 in a row of reds or blacks, high or low, or odd or even. because the universe is lumpy, is the best way i can explain it.
we got to the top of the progession-had the full 350 on the line. i saw 3 reds. i said rory, lets go all in on red. he said no, lets wait for one more red. it came up red. i fell over laughing. rory said ok, all in on red. i said sure. came up black. we went bust. i was laughing so hard my stomach hurt.
"rory, you shoulda listened to me.."
score: casino 1, px and rory, 0.
we were undeterred..
