She spent her first 3 days in an immigration facility in El Paso, which she said was uncomfortable and cold. She was issued a "comprobante", which translates as voucher, which allows her to remain in the USA.

Now, this next part is where Cubans differ from Central Americans and others. After one year and one day in the USA, she can automatically get a green card. Apparently others would have to go before a judge and make a better case that they're refugees.

So wet foot/dry foot may be out the door, but the Cubans still have a major advantage over immigrants from other countries.
