I think it's a publicity stunt.
This "controversy" has drawn more attention to the movie than it was getting, or could have ever gotten, on it's own.
They'll release it after the first of the year in limited theaters with "heightened security" and probably at the same time on DVD for those who are scared to go to the theater. The movie will make money, count on it!

Franco and Rogen's bullshit is so old I'm pissed they get this type of publicity. Rogen has never really been in a good movie, and Franco isn't even funny. It's embarrassing that Obama involved himself in this.
