I meant compare that with today's PC world when a slip of the tongue can ruin people, online petitions, death threats, etc. It would be all over social media. hashtags and the like.

My recollection at the time is that there was a bit more brouhaha than just "a" complaint from a gay newspaper, but remember that social media and the 24 hour news cycle didn't exist in 1984. Granting yes, the blowback now would be much more massive, but that's because social media not only brings out but amplifies the worst that is in all of us, across the spectrum.
