Handguns

I still have my Colt 1911, it's great, but my choice "carry" is the Glock 40, and for home protection... I LOVE my Desert Eagle 44 and DE 50, I also have a few others to select from though...

I still like the Colt 1911 .45 cal. It is my carry weapon of choice very little kick cause it is heavy but what a knock down. It is the small arm of choice for our seal teams. For Ginger I think you should go to the range and shoot several before you purchase the important thing besides taking a course and getting your permit is practice practice practice. So you should get a weapon that you like to shoot and shoot it often. You should be able to shoot your weapon, reload, and shoot again in the dark. Become intimate with it as it may safe your life. Seriously though... You MUST be comfortable with any weapon of choice and KNOW how to use it properly at all times... Also if it comes to HAVING to use it, do NOT shoot to scare or injure, shoot to KILL! your life my depend on it! and it is a LOT easier not having someone that you shot testifying in court against you
I am asking about the registration laws in Arkansas. Perhaps I should have started a new thread with this question. Every one has their favorite hand gun, and can post it here. Does anyone know what the requirements are to register a gun received as a gift?

RM, there are no requirements to register anything. I'm not even sure there's a process to register a firearm in AR (not AK, BTW) if you wanted to. For the concealed carry permit, what you can carry depends on what weapon you shoot to qualify; if you qualify with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver, but if you qualify with an auto, you can carry an auto or revolver. Weird thing, though, even with the permit, you can't carry a blackjack or long-bladed knife. Go figger.

Ginger.... for your car or home, I would stay with the Ruger .357.... but move up to a 4" barrel for better balance, less recoil, improved accuracy.... .38 +P's make a fine defense round... without becoming a hand cannon.

If your purse will be a carrier.... I simply suggest a small S&W J-Frame Airweight, 5-Shot, hammerless, .38 revolver.... very light , and great for getting into and out of a purse quickly!!

Autos are fun and fancy.... but revolvers just work

40 cal. Glock is also my personal favorite. Glad to see your going to take the classes. I have know people to buy guns for intimidation purposes.. only for the gun to wind up itimidating them. Not good.
Then again... if your just going to shoot wild wabbits attacking your garden I would suggest a 22. and a really good reciepe for Wabbit Stew. Never let your kill go to waste. hehehe Originally Posted by Pamelatoo

I prefer revolvers, too. In fact, I've decide on the Smith & Wesson .38. I want an all purpose, in or out of the purse gun. I've completed my class & I've mailed off my carry permit application...I plan on buying it after Christmas. I'm even getting that cool after market grip with the laser in it. I'm really excited!

And I didn't leave any room in the budget for switchblades. Lol @ Mac...good point.

All good points above. If you passed your test for a concealed handgun permit with a revolver, you will be issued a RESTRICTED hand gun permit in Arkansas. You will only be permitted to carry a revolver.

If you use an automatic to pass your test, your permit will be UNRESTRICTED. You can carry a revolver or an automatic.

I will take my test with an automatic Ruger .22. (Yes, you can take the test with an automatic .22.) I 'll pack my Glock .40 automatic and my .45 Taurus Judge (3" chamber) revolver. The Judge is definitely not for light weights.

The Judge comes in 2.5" or 3" chambers. I got the 3" chamber but had to wait. The .410 shells come in 2.5" and 3".

PDX1 410 - Stop the Threat

Highly effective in both shotguns and 410 compatible handguns, the PDX1 in 410 gauge features a distinctive black hull and black oxide high-base head and combines three plated Defense Disc™ projectiles and 12 pellets of plated BB shot. The result is the ideal personal protection load for short range engagement with the performance needed to stop threats. This load is also suitable for varmint hunting and pest control. Designed for use in the Taurus Judge, this new personal defense round provides maximum protection at close range.

Winchester Supreme Elite Ammunition 45 Colt (Long Colt) 225 Grain Bonded PDX1 Jacketed Hollow Point

Tested by the FBI to see if it can stand up to real world, life threatening situations, this ammunition has impressive expansion and notable velocities at various ranges thanks to Winchester's proprietary bonding process. The engineers have welded together the lead and jacket to obtain controlled expansion and a higher weight retention. The bonding can also take on the toughest barriers at varied ranges and velocities to simulate real world threat.

Upon impact, the jacketed hollow point initiates expansion up to 1-1/2 times the size of the original bullet diameter. The unique notching in the bullet creates six equal segments creating maximum expansion on impact. Finally, Winchester has chosen nickel plated brass to maximize reliability through smooth chambering and case ejection.

Like I said before, both the revolver and ammunition are not for light weights.

Description

What a name! It's based on the fact that many judges are now carrying it into the courtroom with them - and for good reason. We know of no better self-defense firearm. Whether loading all 45s - all .410s or alternating them in the cylinder, the Judge is the ultimate shotgun/revolver duo. New for 2008, we're giving you the Judge in Ultra-Lite forged alloy. You'll also be amazed how light this gun is and how easy it is to tote around. Also new is the Judge 3" Magnum. Larger and more powerful, this Judge gives you the extra firepower you need when you have to lay down the law.
