Why? Because the Confederacy was trying to break away.
Why were they trying to break away?
For many reasons, most of which were economic and philosophical.
And most those economic and philosophical reasons were intrinsically connected to slavery, at least for the wealthy and powerful in the south.
So your comments about Lincoln's public statements are true, but they are a diversion. Slavery was the central foundational issue, though not always the publicly acknowledged symptom. Listening to you continue to try and make apologies for slavery because it wasn't really all that bad is disgusting.
