As a former mod (not here obviously) I would have done the exact same thing. You take away the ball to stop the screaming then give it back with the warning to "play nice". The only group that was played favorites with were the mods....they don't want to deal with the petty BS. The below pretty much is the internal monologue of mods everywhere.
