There are substantial numbers of better jobs out there for HS grads. Drilling rigs, mud contractors, drilling location constructors, construction, railroads, machinist, etc. Working in small manufacturing plants making drill pipe, valves, bits, etc. some of these jobs are open to women. None of the secretaries in my office have any college. My top secretary makes $75k in a good year, plus generous benefits.
